Teaching jobs
Catholic and independent school teaching jobs in Victoria are hired school by school, not through the Department’s system. TeachVic places local and international teachers into Catholic and independent schools across Melbourne and regional Victoria, as well as government schools, and teachers pay nothing.

Catholic teaching jobs in Victoria
Victoria’s Catholic sector is large: the Victorian Catholic Education Authority (VCEA, formerly the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria) counts 494 Catholic school communities, 218,900 students and 32,500 teachers and staff. Schools sit within four dioceses, each with its own school body.
| Diocese | School body |
|---|---|
| Archdiocese of Melbourne (including Geelong) | Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) |
| Diocese of Ballarat | Diocese of Ballarat Catholic Education Limited (DOBCEL) |
| Diocese of Sandhurst (including Bendigo) | Catholic Education Sandhurst Ltd |
| Diocese of Sale (Gippsland and Melbourne’s outer south-east) | Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Ltd (DOSCEL) |
For Catholic school teaching jobs in Melbourne, start with MACS, which says it runs 292 schools with 119,879 students and lists vacancies on its job search. Individual schools also advertise on their own websites, and the VCEA lists positions vacant.
Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School
On top of VIT registration, Victorian Catholic schools require their own accreditation, under the sector-wide policy first issued by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. There are two levels:
- Accreditation to Teach in a Catholic School: required of all teachers. It involves 25 hours of professional learning, balanced across three categories.
- Accreditation to Teach Religious Education or Lead in a Catholic School: for teachers of Religious Education and for leaders. It involves formal, assessed study in Religious Education, Theology or Catholic leadership, and also satisfies the first level.
Teachers who join Catholic education without accreditation have five years from their start date to gain it, so you do not need it to apply. Each diocese’s Catholic education office manages the details.
Independent school teaching jobs in Melbourne
Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) says there are more than 235 independent schools in Victoria, operating on 372 campuses and educating more than 179,000 students. Each independent school employs its own staff and runs its own recruitment, so private school vacancies appear on individual school websites, education job boards and through agencies like TeachVic, rather than in one central list.
Before you apply, read the school’s values and programs closely: independent schools each set their own direction, and your application should show how you fit it.
