The 2026 pay rise
In September 2026, 93.1 per cent of Victorian government school employees voted to approve a new agreement under which salaries rise by at least 28.3 per cent over four years (between 28.3 and 32.4 per cent for teachers, assistant principals and principals), including at least 13 per cent by October 2026. The agreement takes effect once approved by the Fair Work Commission.
- More than 90,000 full-time teachers will earn over $1,000 more per month by October 2026, and almost $3,000 more per month by 2030.
- The Government says graduates and experienced teachers in Victoria will earn more than their counterparts in New South Wales.
- Existing barriers to teacher wage progression are being removed.
- Early childhood teachers reach wage parity with government school teachers for the first time, based on the same 28.3 per cent increase.
How your salary is set
In a government school, your salary depends on your classification and where you sit within its range. The Department’s Teaching Service Remuneration Policy covers salary on employment, transfer and promotion, annual progression and accelerated progression. The current salary table for each classification is published by the Department of Education.
Catholic and independent schools pay under their own agreements, so a role’s salary there is set by that school or system.
If you are coming from overseas
On a Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), you must be paid the annual market salary rate for your occupation and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. See 482 or 407: which visa fits.
