Primary school teacher jobs in Melbourne
Primary schools in Victoria run from Foundation (the first year of school) to Year 6. Most primary roles are generalist classroom positions, where you teach one class across the curriculum, but schools also hire specialists and teachers for particular programs.
- Classroom teachers for Foundation to Year 6.
- Primary PE teacher jobs: specialist physical education teachers who teach PE across the school.
- Primary art teacher jobs and primary music teacher jobs: specialist roles across year levels, full-time or part-time depending on the school.
- Languages, STEM and literacy or numeracy support roles, depending on each school’s programs.
Primary vacancies come up across the city, and our current primary roles are in growth suburbs in the west and south-east. See teaching jobs in Melbourne for a region-by-region guide.
Part-time primary teaching jobs
Whether a primary role can be part-time or job-share depends on each school’s staffing. All of our current primary roles are full-time with part-time negotiable, so tell us the days or load you want when you apply and we will look for schools that can accommodate it.
Contract or ongoing
Primary roles are either fixed-term (for a set period) or ongoing (permanent). Fixed-term roles are a common way into a school and can lead to ongoing work. Read CRT, fixed-term and ongoing teaching jobs for how each works. If you are just finishing your degree, see graduate teacher jobs in Victoria.

Common questions
How do I get a primary teaching job in Melbourne?
Make sure your VIT registration is in place or under way, prepare a resume and selection criteria responses, then apply through school sector job boards or a specialist agency. With TeachVic, you register once and we match you to primary roles across government, Catholic and independent schools.
Are there part-time primary teaching jobs in Melbourne?
Yes, depending on the school. Our current primary roles are full-time with part-time negotiable, so tell us the load you want.
Can I teach primary PE, art or music without a specialist qualification?
Schools look for a specialist qualification or strong background in the area. Tell us what you have studied and taught and we will tell you which roles fit.
Do you place overseas-trained primary teachers?
Yes. We place local and international teachers and manage VIT registration and visa sponsorship. Start at international teachers.
