Subjects in demand
The Victorian Government has put money into particular subjects, which is a useful guide to where it is working hardest to find qualified teachers.
- Science, technologies and maths. The Department’s Secondary Sciences, Technologies and Mathematics initiative has funded teachers who are teaching outside their area of expertise to retrain in mathematics, science, digital technologies and design and technologies, to address out-of-field teaching in STEM.
- STEM, EAL and special education. The Victorian Government’s Teach the Future Fellowships, for students starting a secondary teaching degree in 2026, are for those specialising in STEM disciplines, English as an Additional Language and special education.
Nationally, Jobs and Skills Australia’s 2025 Occupation Shortage List found shortages remain in education, with too few qualified applicants for teaching roles. If you teach one of the subjects above, say so up front when you apply.
Contract or ongoing
Secondary roles are either fixed-term (for a set period) or ongoing (permanent). Our current secondary roles are ongoing. Read CRT, fixed-term and ongoing teaching jobs for how each works.

Common questions
Which secondary teaching subjects are in demand in Victoria?
The Victorian Government has funded retraining in maths, science, digital technologies and design and technologies, and its Teach the Future Fellowships target STEM, EAL and special education. Those are the clearest official signals of where qualified teachers are needed.
How do I get a high school teaching job in Melbourne?
Get your VIT registration in place or under way, prepare a resume that leads with your teaching methods, and apply through school job boards or a specialist agency. With TeachVic, you register once and we match you across government, Catholic and independent schools.
Can I teach a subject I did not major in?
Schools prefer teachers qualified in the subject, but some teachers do teach outside their main method. The Department’s STEM initiative was set up to help those teachers become qualified in the area.
Do you place overseas-trained secondary teachers?
Yes. We place local and international teachers and manage VIT registration and visa sponsorship with migration lawyers. Start at international teachers.
Do I pay TeachVic anything?
No. Teachers pay nothing. Schools pay our fee.
